Assistant Professor Ali Serdar

He graduated from Middle East Technical University, Department of Sociology in 1998. He obtained his M.A. from Bilkent University, Department of Turkish Literature in 2002. He received his Ph. D. in 2007, from Bilkent University, Department of Turkish Literature.

He taught Turkish Language courses in Jamia Millia Islamia University, India in spring 2007. Serdar worked as a part time instructor in Department of Turkish Language in İstanbul Bilgi University between 2008-2011. He has been working as instructor in Ozyegin University, Faculty of Social Sciences since 2012. His articles were published in journals such as Edebiyat ve Eleştiri, Praksis, Pasaj, Virgül, and in some edited volumes. His major areas of research interests are Turkish novel, literary theories, Turkish modernization and history of Turkish thought. Serdar is the coordinator of the project titled “History of Serial Novel in Turkish Literature (1830-1928)” which is supported by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, since 2014.

Associate Professor Nihayet Arslan

Arslan graduated in 1980 from the Department of French Language and Literature of Hacettepe University and in 1992 from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography of Ankara University, where she started to work as a research assistant in 1993. After completing her Master’s Degree in 1995, Arslan gave Turkish language lessons in Tunisia IBLV and the University of 9 Avril Tunis between 1997 and 1998, and completed her completed PhD in 2001.

She was appointed as assistant professor in 2005 and as associate professor in 2009 at the Ankara University. In the academic year of 2010-2011, she was assigned by Ankara University to Taiwan National Chengchi University as an exchange professor in the Department of Turkish Language and Culture. In 2012, Arslan was invited to Germany, Duisburg-Essen University, Department of Turkish Teaching as a guest professor. In the academic year of 2012-2013, after leaving her position at Ankara University at the end of 2012, she started working at Yıldız Technical University, Faculty of Sciences and Literature, Department of Turkish Language and Literature in the position she is currently holding.

Nihayet Arslan’s published work includes two books with the titles Nazlı Eray, Bir Okuma Denemesi (2008) and Türk Romanının Oluşumu: Dış Gerçeklik Açısından Bir İnceleme(2007), as well as articles in various journals. Nihayet Arslan’s research mainly focuses on comparative literary studies and the novel genre, and her interest areas are narrative theories, Turkish novel and short stories, fantastic literature and French literature.

Dr. Reyhan Tutumlu

She was graduated from the Department of Radio-Television-Cinema, Ankara University Faculty of Communication in 1998. She received her M.A and Ph.D. in 2002 and 2007, respectively from the Department of Turkish Literature, Bilkent University. She received 2007 Memet Fuat Criticism Reward with her doctorate thesis, and her thesis published by Metis Books titled Yaşamasız Yazabilmek: Vüs’at O. Bener’in Yapıtlarına Anlatıbilimsel Bir Yaklaşım (Writing without Living: A Narratological Approach to Vüs’at O. Bener’s Works ). Her articles were published in journals such as Edebiyat ve Eleştiri, Evrensel Kültür, kitap-lık, Kritik, and Pasaj. Tutumlu’s major areas of research interests are narratology, 19th and 20th century Turkish novel, serial novel, novel-cinema relations, gender and women’s literature. Since 2009 Tutumlu has been working as instructor in the Department of Turkish Language in Sabancı University. She is working in “History of Serial Novels in Turkish Literature (1831-1928)” project as a researcher since 2014.

Dr. Ruken Alp

After graduating from the department of Philosophy at Hacettepe University, she obtained her Phd from Turkish Literature at Bilkent University. Ruken Alps research interests include women’s movements, gender and identity, modern literature, literature and politics, comperative literature and late Ottoman literature.

Assistant Professor Fatih Altuğ

He completed his B.A., M.A. and Ph. D. degrees at Boğaziçi University Turkish Language and Literature Program. He is an assistant professor at Istanbul Şehir University. He co-edited the book Tanzimat ve Edebiyat: Osmanlı İstanbul'unda Modern Edebi Kültür [Tanzimat and Literature: Modern Literary Culture in Ottoman İstanbul] (Türkiye İş Bankası Yayınları, 2014) with Mehmet Fatih Uslu. He also prepared a critical edition of Recaizade Ekrem's Araba Sevdası (İletişim Yayınları, 2014). 

Assistant Professor Murat Cankara

After majoring in theory and history of theatre (Ankara University, 2001), Cankara received his Ph.D. in Turkish literature from Bilkent University in 2011, with a dissertation titled “Empire and Novel: Placing Armeno-Turkish Novels in Ottoman/Turkish Literary Historiography”. His research focused on the novels written by Armenians in the Turkish language using the Armenian script, specifically those from the second half of the nineteenth century. He was a Fulbright Visiting Fellow at Harvard University (Department of Comparative Literature and Center for Middle Eastern Studies) in 2007-2008 and 2012-13 Manoogian Simone Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Armenian Studies Program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he gave a course on Armeno-Turkish writings. He is currently teaching at Social Sciences University of Ankara (Department of Turkish Literature). He is currently interested in modern Ottoman/Turkish and Armanian literatures, social history of the Turkish language, writing systems, orthography and standardization in language, the appropriation of Turkish by Ottoman Armenians, cultural encounters between the Ottoman millets, and Ottoman/Turkish historiography.  

Mustafa Akay

Mustafa Akay graduated from the Sociology and History departments of Boğaziçi University in the year, 2013, and in the same year, he started to M.A program of History in the same university. He is still studying in this program.

In 2013, he worked as assistant in the research, "Syrian Refugees in Turkey", made by Kunaal Sharma and Yegor Lazarev from Columbia University. In the years, 2013-2014, he worked as assistant in the program department of Al Jazeera Turk. In 2014, he worked as assistant at Yaşama Dair Vakıf, in two research projects; "Modern Political Memories in Turkey" and "The Maps of the Mentalities of Politicians in Turkey". Since May 2014, he is working as assistant in the research project of "The History of the Serial Novels in Turkish Literature(1830-1928)", funded by TUBITAK, and directed by Ali Serdar. In the M.A thesis, Akay studying on a universal history written in the 18th century Ottoman Istanbul. Additionally, he is interested in religious sects and sufis in the 19th century Ottoman Empire, biography, history of the city, history of literature and media.

Ruhat Alp

Ruhat Alp was born in Ankara. He recieved his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Hacettepe University Department of History. He is now doing his PhD. studies at the same department, and he is working as a research assistant in Tunceli University Department of History. Alp is also working in Yunus Emre Youth Center as Ney instructor. 

İbrahim Öztürk

Having finished his bachelor's degree at the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Gaziosmanpasa University, and worked as a teacher for a while, he started studying at the Department of Turkish Literature at Bilkent University where he is currently doing his master's degree. He is also working as a part-time instructor at the Turkish Unit of Bilkent University. He is interested in 19th century Ottoman society and novel, modern novel sociology of literature, historiography of literature, and conceptual history.

Sultan Toprak

Sultan Toprak graduated with a BA degree in History and a minor degree in Studies in Politics from Middle East Technical University in 2012. She received an MA degree in History at Sabancı University in 2014 with a thesis entitled “Where People Met: Bozahouses, Coffeehouses and Taverns in the Light of the 16th and 17th Century Court Records of Istanbul”. Currently, she is working as coordinator at Koç University Center for Gender Studies (KOÇ-KAM) and UNESCO Chair in Gender Equality and Sustainable Development. Her research interests are 16thand 17th century Ottoman daily life, eating and drinking habits, visibility of woman and sharia court records.
